This presentation aims to explain what broadcasters around the world are doing in this area and what some of the difficulties are in an industry reliant on proprietary hardware and software as well as IPR-heavy. In particular it will look into the creation of the Open Broadcast Encoder (OBE), a professional television encoder running on commodity hardware which many Norwegian organisations have played a role in. Many of the deployments have been firsts for Open Source in broadcasting, not to mention software encoders, silencing many naysayers.\r\n\r\nKieran Kunhya has worked on a variety of Open Source projects in multimedia, mainly on x264 and FFmpeg/libav, trying to make them suitable for use in professional environments such as Blu-Ray, television transmission and post-production to broadcaster file interchange. However, the technical issues are only half of the puzzle - he also spends a lot of time trying to explain Broadcasting to Open Source people and Open Source to Broadcasters and has spoken at many events about this. He is the creator of the Open Broadcast Encoder project, which is a fully open source broadcast encoder used to deliver a variety of channels around the world from the most high profile channels to much smaller channels, putting small players (e.g Frikanalen in Norway) on a similar playing field to the big players. How come we are now an increasing number to *hate* these machines, when we remember a past in which we used to passionately love them?\r\n\r\nFrom mobile computers (aka \"smartphones\") containing black-boxed baseband processors enabling remote control, and kicking the user away from properly owning his device, to generalized Intel CPUs and their \"Management Engine\" providing also a way for \"real masters\" of our machines to monitor and control all we do online, the age of the technological optimism is long gone. It is almost impossible today to buy a computer that isn't designed and built as an enemy of its user.\r\n\r\nThis shift of modern computing towards \"enemy machines\" has a profound impact on geopolitics (think \"Trump's NSA\"), on power relationships (think \"We know what you did online for the last 15 years\") but also on our humanities and the way we relate to each other: If I cannot understand how a machine works, how will I ever improve it? How will I ever have a chance to participate in a society run by such black boxes?\r\n\r\nThis open discussion will offer an attempt at a narrative to help us (re)frame the issues surrounding Free/Libre software, and the way we participate in these projects. This talk covers how Sandstorm achieves one-click installs of web apps for unprivileged users. To do this, Sandstorm's packaging tools do a few strange things:\n\n- Every app package is a tiny Debian derivative, often as small as 20MB.\n\n- Apps have no Internet connectivity to the outside world.\n\n- Sandstorm uses a FUSE filesystem to identify which files are needed to run the app.\n\n- An app bundles all its needed services, as well as files, resulting in one MySQL service per app.\n\n- Users click and run one _instance_ of an app like Etherpad per document, which is all handled transparently via a web app, a strategy that has neutralized 95% of 0-day web app vulnerabilities, based on our analysis.\n\n- Developers on Mac OS and Windows can create packages for Sandstorm, even though Sandstorm is Linux-only, due to an emphasis on Linux VMs in our development tools.\n\nSomehow we manage to make this scale reasonably well.
